WHAT IS A RIVER?
A river is fresh water which is channeled usually from a highland or mountainous area to a lake or the sea or ocean. Rivers can change and mould the environment around us.
KEY FEATURES OF A RIVER
A river always consists of a number of Key Features:
- UPLAND AREA: A river flows from an upland area of mountains or hills
- LOWLAND AREA: A river flows down to a lowland area
- A WATERSHED: This is the edge of a river basin
- SEA: Rivers either flow into seas or lakes
- CONFLUENCE: This is the meeting of a river (fresh water) and sea (salt water)
- SOURCE: This is the beginning point of any river
- MEANDER: This is the bend in a river
- TRIBUTARY: These are the small streams which feed into a main river
- RIVER BASIN: This is the complete area of land drained by a river
